Granite countertops are 100% natural rock with nothing added. Removed from quarries around the world as large blocks, they're then sliced into sheets. Later, made into amazing kitchen countertops. Very durable material for everyday use kitchens.

Maintenance

Daily cleaning

  • Use warm water with a soft cloth or sponge.

  • Mild dish soap works well for everyday cleaning.

  • For deeper cleaning, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner.

Avoid:

  • Vinegar or citrus cleaners

  • Bleach or ammonia-heavy products

  • Abrasive scrub pads

  • Harsh degreasers used repeatedly

These can dull the finish or weaken the sealer over time.

Heat and scratch resistance

Granite is highly durable:

  • Excellent heat resistance

  • Very scratch resistant

  • Suitable for heavy kitchen use

Still recommended:

  • Use trivets for hot pans

  • Use cutting boards to protect both knives and the surface finish

Sealing

Many granite countertops are sealed at installation, but resealing frequency varies by stone type.

Typical schedule:

  • Every 1–3 years

  • Some dense granites may go much longer

Water test:

  1. Put several drops of water on the countertop.

  2. Wait 10–15 minutes.

  3. If the area darkens, the sealer is wearing off.

Use a penetrating sealer formulated for granite or natural stone.

Spill management

Granite is relatively stain resistant when sealed, but don’t leave spills sitting for long:

  • Oils

  • Wine

  • Coffee

  • Tomato sauce

Wipe spills promptly to avoid staining around seams or porous areas.

Disinfecting safely

For occasional disinfecting:

  • Use diluted isopropyl alcohol sprays or stone-safe disinfectants.

  • Avoid repeated use of strong bleach products.

Polished vs Honed granite

  • Polished granite: glossy, more stain resistant, easier to clean

  • Honed granite: matte finish, can show oils or fingerprints more easily
